What is Self Defence?

Self defence can be described as the action by a person to protect themselves against violence or threatened violence. Self defence has a great deal to do with the correct mental attitude and awareness. The physical techniques make up a very small portion of self defence. The mental or psychological side covers 90% of self defence whereas the physical is just 10%. At Practical Self Protection we teach the complete picture giving you 100% state of the art training.

What is the difference between Martial Arts and Self Defence ?

Traditional Martial Arts can be just that - an art. Some have evolved to a point where they are simply a sport. Martial Arts have a history and can be traced back several centuries. The various martial art styles may have been relative then, but now these styles are not relevant to modern realities. Martial Arts may have been effective where everyone fought in a similar style or way. In today’s street arena you will not see someone take up a martial art stance or guard.

Self defence is all about awareness, de-escalation, escape and, where absolutely necessary the physical skills to stop an aggressor. Remember, you need the whole picture and not just the 10% most Martial Art Schools teach.

I am not very big or strong. How can I learn self defence ?

Learning self defence is not a matter of how big or strong you are. Effective self defence is about having good awareness and verbal skills. It is about having the skills that enable you to escape and survive a violent confrontation unharmed. The physical techniques should be practical and be able to be successfully applied by a person of any gender or build. That is exactly what you get with Practical Self Protection’s training systems.

Can I learn from DVDs ?

Depending on the material you are learning and how thorough it is, you can learn from DVDs provided you also have the necessary support. We offer continual support of various kinds with our different training systems. For example, if you are taking part in our Black Belt course we offer support through our live video support sessions, our web seminars, email and telephone. This unprecedented level of support gives you the best training possible.

How do I choose between all the various DVDs on the Market ?

Being a good consumer means doing your research. Look at the website, how professional does it look? Does the site have credible reviews and testimonials ? Does the company have a satisfaction policy and a privacy policy? Does it look like self defence or is it just someone dressed up in a martial art suit? What does your intuition tell you?

If you are being told you need to complete different modules where most of them deal with ground fighting or weapons, do you think this is really self defence?

If you look at the testimonials and they are so obviously written by the company’s own instructors, what does this tell you about the company?

If they are trying to claim that their techniques are “secret” or “used to train military”, is this truly believable?

Trust your judgement.

How is your material different from what else is available ?

Some self defense programs use complicated techniques taken from outdated martial arts or concepts from sport martial arts such as judo or mixed martial arts. This type of training is either impractical and/or impossible to recall under the stress of a street confrontation. Other systems put a huge focus on the physical and miss out on the main part of the picture – the psychological.

We teach the only self defense program that gives you the entire picture. Our self defense products give you 100% realistic and relevant training. We are the only company on the internet that gives you a high quality product that has proven results and the support network to ensure your continual improvement.

I have been learning martial arts for a while. Is this material too basic for me ?

While martial arts are good for learning discipline and set forms, it is very unlikely that you have covered the practical and psychological side of self defense. Your martial art may have helped you develop a good strike, but do you have the skills and training to recognise a threat before it happens ? Do you know how avoid a threat ? How and when to most effectively deliver your strike ? Proper self defence training will teach you this and so much more. If you are continuing with your martial art training, our training systems will work well along side it.
